What is Six
Sigma?
In a simple explanation, Lean Six Sigma can be described as a
statistical method to eliminate waste and improve efficiency in
an organization’s processes. Having a history dating back to
Motorola and being defined as eliminating defects, Lean Six
Sigma has been taken to an extraordinary level that spans across
an array of industries beyond manufacturing. Now found in the
service and transactional environment, Lean Six Sigma brings a
refreshing outlook on business process improvement for how a
company defines, measures, analyzes, improves and controls both
operations and financials. For companies who have chosen to
implement Lean Six Sigma throughout their enterprise, they have
conservatively impacted their bottom-line with tangible results
in the range of $500,000 to $1,000,000.
What does
it take to implement Lean Six Sigma?
Typically, when a company has made a commitment to implementing
Lean Six Sigma, the company either chooses to do a ‘top-down
approach’ or a ‘bottom-up approach’. Each approach has its pros
and cons as would any Lean Six Strategy. However, regardless
the strategy, there are roles and responsibilities that are
imperative to your company’s Lean Six Sigma success. Take a
moment to review how your Lean Six Sigma strategy should
incorporate the following roles and responsibilities:
Green Belts
–
Green Belts are at the lowest role and responsibility level of
the Lean Six Sigma strategy. They operate utilizing basic
statistics and soft skills to execute their projects as assigned
by either Master Black or Black Belts. In addition, they
prepare the team leader to address the initial opportunities for
improvement. A

Black
Belts
- Black Belts
lead and execute Lean Six Sigma projects within their
organization by applying Lean Six Sigma techniques and tools
with advanced statistics. They are mentors to Green Belts
ensuring proper tool and technique utilization for overall
project success. A

Master Black
Belts
- Master Black Belts attain necessary leadership and change
management skills geared towards successfully leading, coaching,
and guiding enterprise-level projects. They are typically
mentors to Black and Green Belts as well as serve as the middle
manager - executive liaison.
Champions
- Champions help remove any roadblocks the Lean Six Sigma Master
Black and Black Belts encounter, and in general "champion" the
cause and needs to return maximum benefit to the organization.
Lean Six
Sigma Training in
Memphis
It is necessary to train one or more other personnel in the
organization in the details of the tools used to implement Lean
Six Sigma, but it is usually of little or no benefit to an
organization to have someone trained in the tools unless there
is a trained leader/champion leading the program. MSQPC will
offer Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training in September and
October. A
